Review: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

“Don’t you know me Kansas City, I’m the New Berlin wall – try and tear me down.”
I recently went to see the show Hedwig and the Angry at the Fisher Theatre in downtown Detroit. I went into the show not really having any background of it, at all. This show was unlike any other Broadway show that I have ever seen.  Hilarious and risqué the show made for a fun night out. Five things I loved about the show:

1. Involving Detroit.
2. Audience interaction.
3. Costumes – those wigs were amazing!
4. The message of no matter what, be who you are and don’t let others change you.
5. Risqué parts that were ultimately hilarious.
Definitely a fun show to check out if you’re looking for a laugh.

Detroit Riverfront

Metro Detroit only experienced TWO days of sunshine in January, so the sunshine and 60+ degree weather the weekend just provided was much needed. As soon as the sun was out and temperatures started creeping up Saturday I immediately wanted to be at the beach and near water. While the beach part wasn’t really an option I did manage to head down to Detroit and spend time along the Riverfront.

Go Mongo!

I like it on the grill…. a lot! One of my favorite restaurants is Mongolian Grill. You get to create your own stir-fry bowls exactly how you want them and then you watch them cook your delicious bowl on a big round grill. It’s a lot of fun, the food is delicious and it’s also a great date night place to go.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the landmark American musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage. “Internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Robinson is out to set the record straight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that “angry inch.”
Directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and winner of four 2014 Tony Awards, Hedwig and the Angry Inch played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on Broadway and promises to take North America by storm with what Time Magazine proclaims is “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever!
Hedwig and the Angry Inch was originally produced Off-Off-Broadway at Westbeth and then, under the direction of Peter Askin, ran over two years at the Jane Street Theatre beginning in February 1998. The musical won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical and both John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask won Obies in 2001. It won a 1998 New York Magazine Award and Entertainment Weekly’s “Soundtrack of the Year” Award. Time Magazine named Hedwig the Top Musical of 1998.
The film of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, directed by John Cameron Mitchell, won the Audience Award and Best Director Awards at Sundance. Mitchell won the Best New Director from the National Board of Review, the Gotham Awards, and the LA Critics Society. Stage productions have played for many years in Japan and in 2008, Korea hosted a popular televised reality show about the search for a new star to play Hedwig.

Seasons of Love: RENT 20th Anniversary Tour

RENT 20th Anniversary Tour is turning Detroit into Alphabet City for a limited engagement March 21-26, and I am beyond excited. When I was in college RENT on DVD came out, my friends and I were obsessed with it. We watched RENT constantly as well as worked out to the soundtrack. I adore Broadway shows, and I am thrilled to check out the RENT 20th Anniversary Tour right after my birthday for the FIRST time!
In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world.

This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

You can check out Rent 20th Anniversary Tour from March 21-26 at The Fisher Theatre in downtown Detroit.

·      Tuesday through Saturday evening performances at 8:00 p.m.
·      Sunday evening performance at 7:30 p.m.
·      Saturday & Sunday matinee at 2:00 p.m.

Ice Ice Baby

Downtown Utica’s annual Ice and Fireworks festival was this weekend. Saturday we experienced unusually warm weather (almost 50 degrees), which meant the sculptures were melting quickly. I did manage to get down there to see some of great works of art including Lancelot the Utica Unicorns mascot.  Here are a few of my favorites:

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

You can easily buy a box of candy, but where is the love in that? Sweeten the deal and melt your valentine’s or BFFs heart this Tuesday by making your own chocolate covered strawberries. All you need is chocolate, your favorite sprinkles and strawberries.
1. Place your chocolate in a microwave safe dish and microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring between each interval until chocolate is melted and smooth.
2. Holding the strawberry by the stem dip into the melted chocolate and allow the excess chocolate to drip off.
3. Place the dipped berry onto a cookie sheet that has been covered in parchment paper.
4. Add sprinkles to the berry, and repeat the process with your remaining berries.
5. You will want to refrigerate the berries until the chocolate has set.

I am a big fan of football, so of course I was going to be watching the Patriots take on the Falcons and sit firmly in my sit as I watched Lady GaGa absolutely KILL it during the halftime show. Saturday night I posted a sneak peek on Instagram of some treats that I was serving up for the big game. I thought I would share all the goodies with you, so you are prepared when football season arrives again in the fall.

Chocolate Covered Fortune Cookies

I recently got together with some girlfriends for a movie night. Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and we were watching romantic comedies I wanted something on the cutesy side. I decided to dip fortune cookies into chocolate and sprinkles, because who doesn’t love fortune cookies and chocolate? They were a huge hit, and super inexpensive. You can find the fortune cookies in most international aisles of the grocery store. I dipped the cookies in Wilton chocolate and a variety of different sprinkles that I bought at Joann Fabrics.

10 times you can make chocolate covered fortune cookies:
