Boater Babes Shopping Guide

1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8

Spring has officially arrived, on the calendar anyway – the actual temperatures outside are more winter-like. However instead of falling into a depressive slump, I am channeling warmer months. Boat season is right around the corner, so I thought I would share with you a few things I am coveting this boat season.

Skinny Bagels

Summer bodies are made in the winter, but winter bodies crave comfort food and carbs. What’s a girl to do? Make healthy, yes you read that correctly HEALTHY bagels. No yeast, no boiling and no fancy mixer needed these bad boys bake right in the oven and only require THREE ingredients.

Healthy Bagels
Ingredients
1 cup self-rising flour (see tip #1 for help)
1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt
1 egg white, beaten
optional toppings: Everything But the Bagel Seasoning (Trader Joes), sesame seeds, dried onion flakes, dried garlic flakes, cinnamon and raisins…etc

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Place silpat or parchment paper on a baking sheet.
3. Add flour and yogurt to a bowl, mix until combined.
4. Dust flour on your work surface.
5. Remove dough from bowl.
6. Knead the dough until it is tacky but not sticky (13-17 turns)
7. Divide into 4 equal balls.
8. Roll each ball into a ¾-inch thick rope.
9. Join the ends of the ropes to form bagels (I usually make hearts).
10. Brush with egg wash.
11. Sprinkle on your seasoning.
12. Bake on the top rack.
13. Bake for 23 minutes or until done.
14. Allow to cool at least 10 minutes before cutting (trust me I know that’ll be hard, they’re so good hot!).
Tips:
1. If you do not have self-rising flour you can use regular flour, you’ll just need to add 2 teaspoons baking powder and 1 teaspoon kosher salt.
2. Bake on the top rack to prevent the bottoms from browning too much.
3. I use a silpat to cook the bagels on, you can also used parchment paper that has been sprayed with oil.
4. Give the bagels plenty of room to expand.
5. I have only ever made these with Greek yogurt, I have no idea if they work with other yogurts.
6. Add more flour if the dough is sticky.

GoodPop All-Natural Frozen Popsicles

One of my favorite warm weather treats is a popsicle. However, as someone who has a “hippie weirdo clean eating lifestyle” as my mum would say I am not one to just go to the local grocery store and pick up a box of popsicles. For one, if I can’t pronounce an ingredient or don’t know what it is – typically I am not going to buy that product. That’s why you can imagine my excitement when just in time for the weather to break I was introduced to GoodPop. These frozen treats are made with whole, real ingredients. All of their treats are Non-GMO project verified, and they use organic ingredients whenever they can. The dairy based flavors are even rBST free. The GoodPop website states that their frozen treats are made with the best all-natural organic and locally sourced (when they can) ingredients. They use fresh fruit, 100 percent organic and fair trade cane sugar (organic evaporated cane juice) and NOTHING artificial, ever. Plus, these pops are made in small batches to ensure perfection.
With ten great flavors to select from you’re sure to find at least one you love. One of my favorite flavor combinations is Strawberry Lemonade, therefore the Strawberry Lemonade GoodPop has easily become my favorite. This frozen treat has real flavor that I love and even has visible strawberry seeds. These are going to be a staple at my house and on the boat this summer.

March Mitten Crate

[ Disclosure: Mitten Crate provided me with a complimentary box for the purpose of reviewing. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ]

It’s my favorite time of the month– Mitten Crate arrival day! For those of you who don’t know what a Mitten Crate is you can check out my first post here.

Why I love Mitten Crate: It allows me to try out made in Michigan products that I may not of heard of before, or I might have wanted to try but never took the plunge.
Mitten Crate makes an amazing gift idea and is perfect for newlyweds, couples, Michiganders that may have moved out of state, someone away at college and anyone else that loves trying new products.

What I received:
I have never tried any of the products that came in this months Mitten Crate before, which was really neat for me because I love trying new products.

Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee Dark Chocolate
My aunt and I had movie night Saturday. We had sandwiches delivered and tried the toffee as our dessert. We both absolutely loved the toffee and were big fans of it not sticking to our teeth…. at all. Made in Harrison Township.

Blake’s Specialty Meats Garlic Smoked Hunters Sausage
Dearborn Sausage produces this organic and all natural brand of beef sticks. I have not tried them yet, however I am sure A and I have a road trip coming up soon so they’ll be coming along with us. Made in Dearborn.

Scotty O’ Hotty Roasted Red Pepper Sauce
These sauces are said to give a punch of flavor. The website states that it will add a jalapeno level kick to soup, stew, seafood, wings, Mexican and more. Since U of M is in the Final Four I am thinking this is going to get tried when I make up a batch of wings. Made in Inkster.

Benjamin Twiggs Dark Chocolate Covered Dried Cherries
Any dark chocolate and cherry pairing is a winner in my book, and I am especially loving these because they are made with Michigan grown cherries and no cherry can compete with Michigan cherries. Made in Traverse City.

Spun Sugar Detroit Cotton Candy
What is unique about this cotton candy is the fact that it is actually all natural. The ingredients include organic sugar, plant based dyes and natural flavoring – which is amazing. Made in Plymouth.

Poplettes by Bleaf
At first glance I thought these were the cutest itty bitty popcorns, but upon further inspection I learned that its not actually corn but sorghum a cereal grain that makes this one of the cutest snacks. Made in Inkster.

Creating Success

[this post is sponsored]

Have you ever gone on a date before and you just fumbled your way through the entire thing? You find yourself misspeaking, not acting like yourself and just making the worst impressive that you possibly can? Well you’re not alone; many of us do the same thing. Sometimes its when we meet someone for the first time, others it’s at an interview, on a date and more. The harsh reality is you have to live life as if your first impression is the only one you’re going to get and you need to make the most of it. Let’s be honest, if you give someone a bad impression of yourself do you really think they’re going to want to give you another chance to give a better one? Probably not, therefore you always want to put your best foot forward whether that is with personal or personal relationships. Have you ever stopped to think about consumers of your brand, and what they’re getting out of your product? What they’re learning and maybe they’re not buying because the first impression is lacking on key quality points? From a business standpoint there are steps you can take to ensure your customers have a successful journey with what you offer. Right now, we are going to talk about a few things that can help bring you customer success when it comes to your business. You want to set a tone for your business relationship with buyers and users, this helps ensure a strong product adoption while offering a successful customer experience with customer on boarding. So what’s all that mumble jumble even mean? It’s imperative that you are proactive and set up a simple plan that guides new customers through your products. Ultimately you want your consumers to learn about your products, how they work, the value they can get and more with little questions coming from them. Descriptions should always speak about characteristics, important key points and the fundamentals for user adoption. Small and simple changes that make things clearer to the consumer will lead to better things for your company, brand…etc. Just like dating things take time to become great. You need to learn about your consumer just as you would your partner in a relationship to find out what will bring you the most success. Everything great takes time, and with patience and the proper elements to bring you success your sure to get to where you need to be.

Five Things: Birthday Edition

A few months ago I was in a bakery and saw the cutest unicorn cake. I took a couple pictures and showed my mum to see if she could make it for my birthday. She said of course that it would be easy to make - she is super talented and my brother and I are extremely lucky to always get super cute cakes. Unintentionally since I wanted a unicorn cake it became the whole theme of my birthday. Here's a peek at some of the goodies....

Restaurant Review: River Crab

My birthday was Sunday, and Andrew surprised me with dinner at River Crab. Little back-story apparently this was the place he wanted to take me on our first “real” date, but they had a private event that night so he had to get creative and come up with a different place. I guess my birthday presented him with the perfect opportunity to bring me there. First let me start by saying if you love the water and seafood, this is definitely the place for you. The view was absolutely stunning, and we even watched a freighter go by. So let’s get to the good stuff… the food….

We started the evening with Firecracker Shrimp which was tempura battered with a creamy sweet chili glaze on top. Absolutely AMAZING, and I usually do not like shrimp. Having fresh with a kick really makes a difference.

A ordered the Applejack Sea Bass with sweet bourbon reduction, apples, sun-dried cherries and wild rice risotto. This was his first experience with sea bass, and he was really impressed by the taste and flavor.

I ordered the Planked Salmon with tarragon mustard glaze, roasted vegetables and roasted redskins. Hands down the BEST salmon I have ever had.

If you know A and I you know we hardly ever pass up dessert. When you celebrate your birthday at River Crab they hook you up with their homemade Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée, which consist of smooth and creamy custard with real vanilla bean and a caramelized sugar crust. A asked the waiter if he could find a candle so I could make a birthday wish and he came back with a pink one – even the waiter knew my favorite color - ha. This Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée was the BEST crème brûlée that I have EVER had, and I have had it made right in front of me by a fancy pants French pastry chef in New Orleans before. If you go to the River Crab I highly recommend ordering it for dessert, you will not regret it and you can thank me later.
Key Lime Pie was on the menu, so if you have been reading Fashion meets Food the past few months you may have figured out that A loves key lime pie. The Key Lime Pie is made with their signature house recipe, fresh key lime juice and a graham cracker crust.
