DIY: Flower Tower

I am always trying to come up with new ways to display flowers. Last year I created a tilted whimsical planter (seen here). This year I did two different versions of the planter that I will post next week. However my newest addition is the flower tower that I saw in a Home Depot commercial. You can find Home Depot’s directions here, and you can also see my tips and tricks for creating the planter below.
 {fill the pot halfway insert the zip tied chicken wire and then fill pot to the top}
use a good soil: I used Moisture Control
 {Add two layers of landscape fabric to the inside}
make sure the landscape fabric is NOT stretchy
 {only add enough dirt to do one row at a time}

Skipping Town

I live in a beach/tourist town and while everyone was piling in for the holiday weekend I skipped town, and headed down to my parents house. While I didn’t spend time on the beach the low-key weekend was just what I needed. Here’s a glance at what I was up to. How did you spend your holiday weekend?

Lemon Batter Bars

This past weekend I spent time at my parent’s house and in between barbeques and trips to get ice cream we found time to whip up a couple holiday favorites. Chocolate chip bars for the boys and lemon batter bars for us girls. You may know of my love for all things lemon (as you can see here, here and here), but these bars hands down are my favorite. They’re so simple to make and it’s hard to just have one!

Lemon Batter Bars
Ingredients
1 package lemon cake mix (I used Duncan Hines)
½ cup salted butter; melted
3 eggs
1 package cream cheese; softened
1 can lemon frosting (I used Duncan Hines)

Directions
1. Combine cake mix, butter and one egg until moist. Pat into a greased 9”x13” pan.
2. Blend lemon frosting into cream cheese until smooth.
3. Reserve a little over ½ cup for frosting baked bars.
4. Add remaining two eggs to the frosting mixture and beat on high for 5 minutes.
5. Spread frosting mixture (with the eggs) over the base.
6. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes.
7. Cool bars, frost, cut into bars and keep in the refrigerator.

I live in a tourist town and while everyone is piling in for Memorial weekend for plenty of sun and beach time I am heading down to Detroit to spend time with my family. This weekend will consist of plenty of time spent outside, barbecues, picnics, bocce ball and even a trip to the Tigers game.  What are your plans for the holiday weekend?

Krispie Sparkler

A sweet and simple treat for Memorial weekend. Featuring a star shaped Rice Krispie treat on a skewer paired with three blueberries and strawberries. I'll be using these as my table centerpiece.

DIY: Watermelon Pupsicle


Can you believe it’s already Memorial Day weekend? While the official start to summer does not come until later in June, in my book Memorial weekend is the start of summer. With summer comes warmer temperatures and I have the perfect treat for you and your pup! Simply cube some watermelon, put it in a baggie, and toss it into the freezer for a natural popsicle. Note: Since Jack is so little I just cut up large slices and share them with him outside (he usually just licks things so the chunks didn’t work for him).

Pronto Pups (Corn Dogs)

This past weekend I was hanging out on the boardwalk and noticed tons of fair food. From funnel cakes and elephant ears to pronto pups (corn dogs) and deep fried Oreos the boardwalk had a wide variety of fried foods. I passed up on the opportunity to indulge, but later found myself making my own batch of corn dogs to have at the beach with friends. They were everything I had hoped for and I think they’ll become a beach staple this summer.   

Corn Dogs
Ingredients
1 1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup cornmeal
4 Tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
3/4 cup milk

Directions
1. Mix all dry ingredients, and then add eggs and milk. Mix until lump free. Insert a skewer into each hot dog. Dip hot dogs into the batter to coat.
2. Deep fry in hot oil (I did this on the bbq). When light golden brown remove and place on a paper towel.

Makes one package hot dogs with heavy crust or two packages with light.

Holland

A couple of weeks back, we went out to Holland for the afternoon. It’s about an hour and thirty minute drive from my place, but there was no better time to go than during Tulip Time (which you can see here). Holland is a coastal city on the western side of Michigan, which was founded by Dutch Americans. Dutch heritage is still a significant characteristic of the town, which results in your feeling like you are actually in Holland.

Can you believe that Memorial Day is just around the corner. It seems like spring has finally arrived and now summer will be starting. I have yet to even start to build a backyard space worth spending the afternoon in for get-togethers and cookouts. This weekend my goal is to work on picking an area for a garden and starting to fence it off (major deer problem) as well as planting flowers as you come up the driveway. What are your weekend plans?

Homemade Root Beer

On this day in 1866 root beer was created, and quickly became an American classic. This week I decided to recreate the classic and it was everything I could of hoped for. The perfect root beer flavor with a slight hint of vanilla, and of course I couldn’t pass up making it into a float. 

Homemade Root Beer
Ingredients
1 ¾ cups sugar (I used sugar that has been infused with vanilla beans)
2 ¼ cups water
2 tablespoons root beer concentrate (I used Watkins)
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract (I used Watkins)
Club Soda

Directions
1. Combine sugar and water in a medium saucepan. Heat and stir until mixture starts to boil and sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and cool.
2. Add root beer concentrate and vanilla and mix thoroughly.
3. To serve, add ½ to 1/3 cup (according to taste) root beer syrup to 5 ounces club soda.

Makes 3 cups root beer syrup.
